A twin set of new Captain Marvel fan-posters hilariously put Goose the Cat and Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson at the forefront by replacing the film’s ensemble cast with only their faces. Next on the Marvel Studios docket, the film will officially introduce Brie Larson as Carol Danvers - the most powerful hero in the MCU.
Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel will be set in 1995, with its events pre-dating the first Iron Man. The film will incorporate the Kree-Skrull war into its narrative as Earth gets caught in the middle of the two races’ conflict. Considering its time setting, fans will see young (still two-eyed) Nick Fury and Coulson back in their early days as S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives. Aside from the familiar faces, the project will also introduce new characters such as the members of Starforce, Talos - Ben Mendelsohn’s Skrull leader, as well as still-unnamed roles for Jude Law and Annette Bening. With just less than two months before the film hit theaters, a slew of marketing materials have been rolled out, and some fans are having fun with the latest poster for the flick.
Coming from digital artist BossLogic on Twitter are two pieces of fan-art mining design inspiration from the most recent poster for Captain Marvel. The creator hilariously replaced everyone in the one-sheet with either Goose the Cat or Coulson. Initially coming up with Goose’s version after the original poster noticeably included Danvers’ cat at the bottom of the image, the artist opted to create a brand new iteration solely dedicated to Coulson after he realized that the official design didn’t include him. Check out the illustrations below:
It’s an interesting decision for Marvel Studios to add Goose in the original poster, especially considering its position in the whole sheet. Danvers’ cat is peculiarly perched in front of its owner’s Starforce team although there’s no indication that it has any connection to the Kree elite force. Perhaps it’s because the feline is expected to be more than just a domesticated cat similar to the reveal in the comic books that it’s actually the last of a ruthless alien species whose bodies contain interdimensional portals known as the Flerkens. Regardless of its role in Captain Marvel, Goose is already expected to steal the spotlight, with early screenings crowning it as the movie’s highlight.
As for Coulson, the idea seeing him back again on the big screen since his supposed death in 2012’s The Avengers is arguably one of the most-anticipated parts of Captain Marvel. It’s unknown if his appearance in the upcoming flick will mark his return in the bigger MCU fold considering that Avengers: Endgame will hit theaters not long after the Brie Larson-flick. That said, the core Avengers would at least have to learn his fate before some, if not most of them bid goodbye in the MCU.
